Here are some facts on
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD's):
By age 24,
one in three
sexually active people
are estimated to have
an STD.
15 million Americans are
infected with an STD every year:
Chlamydia
- called the "silent sterilizer"
because 85% of females
have no signs or symptoms of infection.
Sterility (inability to get
pregnant) or an increased risk of
tubal pregnancies can result from
chlamydia left untreated.
Herpes
- 90% of those infected
do not realize they have the
infection, but are highly contagious.
Herpes produces painful blisters
and sores in and around the
genital area. There is
no cure.
HPV
- "genital warts" - the
most prevalent STD in the USA. HPV can
cause warts in and around
the genital area, and these are highly
contagious. HPV causes
almost all cervical cancers. There is
no cure
for HPV.
HIV
- HIV causes AIDS. About
one million Americans are infected
with HIV, and it is most
contagious in the first months when most do
not know they are
infected. There is
no cure.
